In a survey conducted by the British Orthodontic Society in June 2016, 75% of dental practices who responded to the survey reported an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment. A key driver for this increase was identified as a heightened awareness of adult orthodontics alongside rising expectations on how treatment can positively impact on both appearance and well-being. The majority of adults seeking treatment (66%) were in the age range 26-40 years old with 22% in the age range 41-55. What is also interesting to read is that the majority of practices have more than 50% of adult private patients which further demonstrates the massive growth in adult orthodontics over recent years.
Alison Murray, President of the British Orthodontic Society, says: “We welcome the growth of interest in orthodontic treatment. Many adults who have undergone orthodontic treatment report higher levels of self-esteem and their quality of life is often significantly improved.”
