Prof. Kevin O’Brien has published a review of a retention trial conducted to find out whether fixed retainers are any better than removable vacuum formed retainers. The trial involved 82 patients who had completed treatment with fixed braces and randomly assigned them to receive either fixed retainers or removable Essix retainers. Study models were taken at 6, 12 and 18 month intervals to measure whether any movement had taken place.
The results of the trial concluded that there was little difference between the two retainers but as with any review, there are other factors to be taken into account and you should discuss your thoughts about retainers with your orthodontist.
